Is your church part of this?

Question

My wife and I are going with a group from our church, to help rebuild people's houses in New Orleans.

The Southern Baptists have set up a program, so that groups from churches all over the country can come, have a place to stay and eat. They set up the work, so any time a group can come, there is a project ready to go.

The goal is 2000 homes, and 20 churches rebuilt in 2 years.

I wonder if other denominations have similar programs? It would be interesting to see what other Christian folks are doing to invest in the lives of the people of New Orleans.

Maybe this should be for anyone. Not just Christian groups. What projects does your organization have going? Muslims? Atheists? Anybody?

My question is, why limit it to Christians? Many atheists I know also like volunteering for a good cause. I also know many Muslims that are very generous.

Limiting to Christians seems rather self-promoting, to me.

Great point.
The Southern Baptist have a seminary in New Orleans that was nearly destroyed. Yet, they push on. They put their money where their mouth is, so to speak.
Unfortunately many churches have sent groups to the Gulf Coast to set up so-called "help centers" so they can take pictures to send back home and pat themselves on the back, and look good in front of their own congregations.
Several organizations have gone far above and beyond the call of duty here- the Southern Baptist are one of them.

The Catholic New Orleans Archdiocese has several programs.

One is Operation Helping Hands. Operation Helping brings volunteers from across the country together to gut homes of elderly, disabled, or uninsured victims of Hurricane Katrina. The flooding in the aftermath of the hurricane severely damaged as many as 200,000 homes in the Greater New Orleans area, and gutting these homes is the first step in the road to rebuilding.

Catholic Charities provides tools and a work site supervisor to teams of 15 volunteers, and after about 2.5 days, the house gutting is complete. Through this program, we hope to enable displaced residents to return and rebuild.

Accomplishments to Date
+ Over 1,000 residences have been gutted.
+ About 5,500 volunteers have given more than 150,000 hours of service.

The Church Of God,(Cleveland, Tennessee), has Men and Women Of Action. They have been on The Ground in the Gulf since Day One. There is also The Church Of God Chaplain's Commission. They've been on The Ground from Day One.

I have been out of church for 3 years now. So I am not sure what they do. I am a Baptist as well and they are always helping so I am sure they have done something.

We offered our help and it was refused. We are not wanted around"good christian people" So instead we donated building materials.

Yeah, and we know what else they are doing!!!! Brainwashing, hellfire and damnation to people all ready not feeling so great about Christians... This is a good intention to build homes, but not the sole intention... or soul intentions....

We shouldn't waste our time rebuilding New Orleans.

Any city built below sea level will eventually be destroyed.
