The O/D Off means that your vehicle will operate with overdrive locked out. Usually this button is used for towing when extra pulling power is needed turn off the overdrive, it will save your transmission from damage caused by continuous shifting into and out of overdrive. Overdrive lowers your RPM's on your engine at highway speeds to give you better gas mileage at highway speeds. As for turning it off in the city its not necessary because you aren't going to be going that fast usually to make a difference. O/D off has nothing to do with the 4WD system if your vehicle is a 4WD. All the O/D button has to do is with the transmission gear selections. If your car/SUV/or truck has a 4 Speed automatic, pressing and turning off the overdrive limits the vehicle to 1st gear through 3rd gear eliminating shifting into final gear. Also when in mountainous areas turning off the Overdrive allows better power when climbing hills.

It's O/D, which stands for Overdrive, or "final gear", which is for highway cruising. Some people turn that off in the city for more "power". It's debatable if it's actually needed.
I have a 96 Ford Contour and I have that exact same button.

If you switch it off it means the revs will stay higher and its handy on the motorway as you can use it to overtake or get up hills easier without using kickdown because the box will not change to top gear you have more power as the revs are higher and when the manoeuvre is over switch it on and the revs will drop for more economical cruising.

It's actually O/D, for overdrive. It allows you to prevent the transmission from changing into top gear (old fashioned overdrive).
It allows you to descend long hills with some engine braking.

Are you sure it's not O/D off? Overdrive for the top gear to save petrol when cruising at high speed.

O/O?? Do you mean O/D?
O/D stands for Over-Drive.....it is used to enhance fuel economy when travelling when gear changes are less-frequent.....it is basically the same as a 5th gear in a manual gear change car.

Since you asked in car makes, Ford, I assume it's a Ford you're talking about. It would help to know what model. If it's an SUV with 4 wheel drive, I would guess it is the setting that puts everything in neutral, so you can tow it (the so called flat tow, all tires on the ground) behind your motor home. You might check the manual in the glove box if you have one. (Manual that is, not glove box. lol)
