we adopted a boston when i was in fourth grade. he died last year and i have bought one and adopted another since then. they are great dogs. they are very smart and have good personalities but are also fairly stubborn. about the large family thing, they tend to pick one person to be "their person". that person was me when i was in fourth grade which drove my sister crazy so if your kids get jealous easily then maybe not. i just mean that spike preferred me to everyone else, he slept with me, followed me around moreso than the other family members, and that sort of thing. the two i have now, harry and luna, are about a year old. they are noisy but at the same time very quiet. what i mean is, since they have flat noises they make a lot of noise when they are playing or excited like snorkling noises and they snore when they sleep, but quiet bc they NEVER bark. luna will bark if startled but harry will only bark if you get in his face and hold a high pitched note really loud. they tend to be good with kids. they also like other dogs; harry will always go up to the german shephards and dobermans in petco and try to play with them and they look at him like he's crazy. they don't shed nearly as much as a lot of dogs but they do shed, you will find hair in the places they hang out most. luna is pretty nervous but i think that is bc she is a rescue dog- she was on the streets for at least two weeks in the summer and she was in heat... and also i think she was abused but she has gotten a lot better. harry and spike are/were not nervous at all, on the contrary very confident. they are very loving dogs. harry will come sit on me (or if we are riding in the car) and lick my arm in the same place for several minutes. if luna does something bad she will approach you when she thinks your anger has subsided and get next to you, roll onto her back (i suppose to show that she is being submissive) and spaz out a minute or so, then once you pet her she starts "grooming" you (licking your arm from top to bottom). also, harry will always let you know if he (or luna) did something wrong (if he shredded a kleenex or had an accident). he will come find you and sit down in this pitiful hunched figure and look at you then look down. has has the best guilty face. as i think i said before, they are very smart but also stubborn. i think any boston would benefit from a $100 petsmart beginner class. i started harry at them around 7 months and he got much better. he is very treat-motivated so as soon as he would figure out what it was we wanted him to do to get the treat, he would do it every time (it would take about 3 times before he got it). bostons also tend to mirror "their person's" mood; if you are energetic and want to go outside, they want to too. if you are tired and just wanna watch tv, they want to sit next to you and nap.

Boston terriers are not large, there are three different weight ranges for them as the biggest boston you will see will be medium sized.Weight ranges from 6.8kg-11.4kg.There not overly noisy dogs and will bark if they feel the need to.They do shed but as there coat is very thin it doesn't need alot of maintenence.Exercise requirements are not excessive, they would be happy with 2 20min walks a day or more if you can give it.Any dog can be snappy but carefully raised a boston is a lovely, funny, loyall pet.Good luck

My stepdaughter had one and I thought I hated that dog until she had to come and live with us for 6 months. She was like part of our family and I hated to see her go when it was time. She was so smart and had so many ways that made her special. It was like she was almost human. This breed loves attention and loves everyone. They are very active and need room to play outside some. Very intelligent and love to make you happy. Easy to train and can do some of the funniest stunts. Some have problems with breathing and snoring and some may require surgery due so their short faces. Do not shed much. Great pet for family. They especially love dog toys and treats! My stepdaughters died about 7 months ago and is missed really bad. We may get another one some day. Yes they do like to yap but let you know someone is near.

Boston Terriers are excellent family pets. They are very smart, animated and playful.
They shed minimally which you can also support their short shiny coats with a good quality dog food, daily vitamin and Missing Link supplement.
Bostons are not yappy and are excellent watch dogs for their size. They are not aggressive and get along with other pets very well.
Bostons are not known for being nervous. Actually, they have a mellow demeanor but love to play.
They do snort/snore and sometimes have problems with it but it's not a given that they will.
