My husband and I are travelling on an adventure holiday in the remote parts of Brazil. Both of us seem to have picked up some sort of eye infection. There is no doctor around but a small one room pharmacy sold us the following medicines. Apparently here you dont need a prescription to buy anything. They are the following eye drops.
Maxitrol - containing dexametasone, neomycin sulphate and polimycin B sulpate,
Claroft- containing nafazolina cloridrato
Trisorb - containing dextrana, hipromelose, glicerol.
Some of the names are the portuguese version. The problem is both my husband and I are borderline glaucoma and were warned by our own ophthalmologist never to indiscriminately use eye drops as they might contain steroids that could drive up the eye pressure. We dont know if these drops contain steroids and we have no doctor to ask here. Please if anyone can comment we would be grateful.

Avoid Maxitrol! that's the only one that contains steroid: Dexamethasone.
Clearoft is to treat irritations caused by smog and air pollution and Trisorb an artificial tear. And none of the three is to treat an eye infection (especially Maxitrol should be avoided during eye infections)

sorry to hear about your eye troubles, hope it doesn't ruin your vacation.
Maxitrol: does contain steroids (Dexamethasone)
Naphazoline: is a sympathomimetic decongestant (vasoconstrictor) , which is definitely contraindicated in narrow angle glaucoma (i am assuming you have open angle) I wouldn't use it with glaucoma and if you really have an infection, it wont help anyways. It is more for allergy symptoms.
Trisorb is an artificial tear product. definitely use these for comfort.
No way for me to tell if you actually do have an infection (conjunctivitis or otherwise) but an antibiotic only drop is not a bad idea.
Polytrim (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole)
ofloxacin
ciprofloxacin
Vigamox (moxifloxacin)
nobody should be on steroid combination drops without being seen by an ophthalmologist. definitely see an ophthalmologist when you can.

Dexametasone is a corticosteroid(neomycin is an antibiotic) naphazolin is contraindicated for glaucoma,I'm not sure abt the Trisorb
since u haven't mentioned abt any symptoms, hard to think what could be the infection.
most probably it could be some kind of viral conjunctivitis if there isn't any purulent discharge ,and it's self limiting, but if it's with purulent discharge it's could be due to bacterial infection and u will need specific antibacterial eye drops for that.At least try to get some help over the phone from a physician.
hope everything will be fine

those ingredients are listed with the portuguese spellings, but I can tell you for sure maxitrol DOES have steroids (dexamethosone). Claroft sounds like an allergy drop and Trisorb sounds like artificial tears. I'm not positive though, so please see a doctor! Doctor's in Brazil should be able to take care of you too! good luck
Try calling your ophthalmolgist in the US, that's the best and only advice!

According to Webmd.com, Maxitrol is used to treat bacterial eye infections and it does not have anything in the precautions about it being a steriod or being dangerous for use by patients with glaucoma It does say though, not to use it if you are allergic to gentamicin, tobramycin or hydrocortisone, prednisone. The other two medications can not be found on webmd and neither can their ingreidiants. I worked at an ophthalmologist's office for four years and while we used Maxitrol frequently, I have never heard of the other two drops. They may be something that would be over the counter in the US.

Maxitrol DOES contain steroids.
http://www.tiscali.co.uk/lifestyle/healthfitness/health_advice/netdoctor/archive/100001586.htmlSource:
Dexamethasone, MAXITROL, belongs to a group of medicines known as corticosteroids, used for reducing inflammation.
Claroft is what is referred to as Claritin in the USA. Non - steroidal over the counter allergy pill in USA, so if that is in eye drop form I'm unable to help with that one. So sorry!
Trisorb is just an eye lubricant. No steroids. It's like Visine or Artificial tears.

Be sure to wash your faces and hands frequently with CLEAN bottled water or use some disposable wipes, like baby wipes. Don't share towel or wash cloth, try to get clean towel and wash cloth daily if possible.

..I would not use the ones listed and I would try to get totally to a doctor or find a doctor on vacation or get a bottle of clear bottled water and do a eye wash with a small cup for moisture. Do not share the eye wash cup.
