I have had three surgeries and each time they ask if I have a cold. I think it has something to do with the anesthesia they give you. It could have an effect on certain types of cold medicines.

It depends on the type of surgery and the type of anesthetic. Surgery is sometimes OK if they plan to use a pain blocker or amnesiatic drug, and if the surgery doesn't affect the respiratory system. Surgery is probably not OK if they plan to put you completely under. Call your docs office and ask them.
