Well paralysis can be set on by a number of things. Generally something that interfers with the nerve transmissions from the brain to the muscles.
This could be a viral infection, an auto immmunue problem such as Gullian Barre. a Traumatic brain injury such as a stroke or severe blow to the head.
So as far as a way to prevent it, well there really isnt one. Unless you plan to live in a box.

Wear your seatbelt, don't dive headfirst into a pool of shallow water, wear a helmet while on a bike

Avoid spinal cord injuries. If you are ever in one, don't let anybody move you unless he or she is a trained medical professional.
