Ciprofloxacin and other antimicrobials ( most notoriously tetracycline & amoxcillin) kill the normal bacteria in your intestines. This alters the absorption and effect of birth control pills is diminished. (this is the same reason that they cause diarrhoea)

Antiepileptic drugs and Rifampicin (anti TB drug) also interfere with functioning of contraceptive pills by acting on metabolism of the pills in the liver.

Consult your doctor to adjust the dose of the pill to retain efficacy.

Any antibiotic will counter act the effects of birth control...therefore use alternative birth control method (and take your pill!). After you stop cipro you need to wait until you start a new birth control pack before not using any back up birth control

be careful with all antibiotics when taking birth control. it is recommended that you use additional protection while on the antiotics.
