I went into the US Embassy here in Phnom Phen, Cambodia to have additional pages added to my passport. They wouldn't return my passport to me, said there was a problem, that I should return tomorrow. Here I am in a foreign country with no passport. What's going on? They said worse case they would issue a passport which would only allow me to leave Cambodia. Can they get away with this? Who should I contact for help?

You may have to just accept it and work it out once you get back here... the only real means of support there is the embassy. You could always email your senator or us rep back home...

It kinda looks like you may have been flagged BUT you should return the next day as they say. It is a problem if you are out of visa pages in your passport. If you had tried to return w/o anymore space (btw, this is a bit subjective of what constitutes "enough space") for stamps, the departing airport could have denied your boarding or, upon arrival to the next country (even the US), they could keep you from entering and keep your passport there. You only can request extra pages by going to the US Embassy when you are abroad, so you did the right thing. Good luck tomorrow.

What's going on? Maybe you already know. For example, are you using a passport that you have reported lost or stolen? Do you owe back child support? Those are the two most common reasons why we will confiscate a US passport and endorse it for return to the US only.

And yes, we can get away with that.

That is standard procedure if you are a criminal suspect. Your passport could be expired or reported stolen.

no, unless you have been red flagged, terror list, expired or needed updating. Other wise what they have done is illegal in the US, but I dont know about there.
