Firefox is an alternative and superior web browser. Since I've already answered a question about Firefox that will also cover your question I'm just going to copy and paste the rest of it.
Firefox is way better than IE could ever think about being. Firefox has better extensions, more options, and it's open source. At any given time an open source project tends to have three times as many people working on it than are employed by Microsoft. IE has far more security problems and they don't get fixed nearly as fast as the few security problems Firefox has because only the Microsoft employees working on IE can even look at its source code but everyone is free to look through the source code for Firefox and help improve it.
You don't even necessarily need IE to get your updates for whatever Windows OS that you're using. At the end of the month you can download all of the updates at once from http://www.autopatcher.com/ and then install them all at once and it allows you to pick and choose what you install from the update package meaning that you don't need to install the useless WGA spyware if you don't want to. If you would prefer downloading updates as they are released rather than waiting until the end of the month then you can get them using Firefox at http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/....
As far as needing IE to access content on some websites that unnecessarily prohibit your use of an alternative browser there is a plugin for Firefox called User Agent Switcher and you can set Firefox to tell that website that it is IE. In the rare situation where content on a website can't be correctly viewed using Firefox then you can use a Firefox plugin called IE tab to open up IE in a Firefox tab. There's a much wider variety of extensions available for Firefox than there are for IE and the extensions for Firefox cover a wider variety of uses than the extensions available for IE.
Unfortunately IE is so integrated into Windows XP that it cannot be removed entirely without some serious consequences so you'll always be stuck with the IE core unless you want an OS that you can't do anything with. That was a poor decision made by the programmers. None of the reasons that you need the IE core have anything to do with using the Internet. If you have the OS already installed then you won't be able to remove IE to the extent that it could mess anything up. All I have on my computer is the IE core. The IE browser isn't on my computer at all and it all works fine and i don't have to worry about spyware as much.

Mozilla Firefox is a very interesting new browser out for download. It was the first browser to have the tabs like in the new IE7. It's quite nice because it doesn't hog your processes like internet explorer does, either. Also, it's totally free.

Firefox is an Internet browser with functionality equal to or superior to Internet Explorer, depending on which version of IE you have. IE7 and Firefox 2.0 are roughly equal. IE6 and earlier are inferior to Firefox.
