You on a Diet by Dr. Oz is great. He doesn't cut out any of the food groups like some books do. He discusses easy steps people can take to maintain a healthy weight.

There's lots of crap out there that will help you achieve short-term weight loss. Without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read (not just in the diet category) is a book titled "New Optimum Nutrition Bible" by Patrick Holford. It's an important and sometimes terrifying read that not only tells you what you should eat ideally, but also explains in detail why. It's VERY well researched and the evidence presented in the book can be sometimes quite alarming. If you care about your health (and your long-term weight), you must read this book, I promise it is riveting. Every home should have a copy.

"You on a Diet" looks at weight loss from a scientific point of view. It gives a lot of common sense ways to lose weight without all the fads.
