This will only be for hanging clothes and shoes. I do not want something overly large but at the same time large enough for my husband and myself.

The size certainly is relative to the need.

My ex, now living in the house I once shared, has a "walk in" 8x10. That may seem large, but consider if you had hanger bars on 3 sides, the floor space pretty much is closer to 6x7.

You should consider the door width and its place in the closet when it's open, and you want access. That's a moot point perhaps if the door opens out; BUT that may require the space in the adjacent room to be adjusted?

Also in that example of the "walk in"; the ceilings are 10 feet, allowing hanging two tiers of garments. The top tier is usually rotated, seasonally, and accessed either with a step stool or long enough broom handle with a hook on one end. That "tool" is then hung on the same bars, after use.

Certainly you could go large enough to include a mirror, bench or chair, allowing enough space to create a "dressing room"

Shoes are as easy, with proper racks and/or shelves.

As we all know, your "stuff" will grow to fill, then exceed, the amount of storage you have available. If you are a hoarder like me, I suggest as large as you can afford. If you are one of the lucky ones who can discard old items, the get just the amount of space you really need. I am in the process of building a new home, and my master closet will be 8 x 15, with an upper row of racks for off season clothes. And I'm still not sure that is big enough. Good Luck!

Make it larger than you expect to use. I used space from my bedroom to make the closet larger. This helped me take out the clutter from my bedroom and in the closet where it belongs. Even though my bedroom is smaller now, without the clutter, feels large and roomy and very, very soothing. And when I have guest I don't have to worry that my room being a mess as it is hidden away in my walk in closet.
