I"m christian,- catholic to be exact-, and when I walk through the srtreets of my city a lot of poor kids come up to me and ask me to give them money. I used to always give them at least one buck, but I soon realised many of them use that money to get smack or cocaine. On the other hand, others really need the money "cause they"ve got nothing to eat, or need clothes. What should I do?

Give them the money, if only one in ten is really helped by your kindness then You're running a ten percent success rate and if you earned that sort of return on investment then it would be out standing!

If any person is going to buy drugs, alcohol, or smokes for themselves or who knows are you willing to be a part in it? Some of those poor kids could be runners under the bondage of others and you could be one of their tricks. You are a christian, and are we are to listen to the Holy Spirit within? If the next thing you have to do is say...please God don't let my part of giving enabling them to "use that money to get smack or cocaine". Could your helping someone be much more efficient if you knew for sure it wasn't going to end up harming someone instead of helping them like you want to? Why not try making some cards up with a few numbers and addresses on them so they can get themselves something to eat if they are starving. Maybe put some numbers on the little card that point them to a job placement progam or even a scripture to let them know they are loved and accepting God's love helps his children grow forward. There are scriptures on personal responsibility ....God tells us we must take care of the life he has given us. Just to let you know...at our fast food places around here you can buy a pop and get the rest in cash so that may not be a good idea. I think back in the day when people did not have money, raised there own food they dealt with it by giving the food directly to them and and a few kind words that contained truth.

Most of those kids have not all run away from abusive homes - many cases are falsely documented to keep government jobs running. Some of them have attempted to rule over their parents with a societal vengeance and gone thru the system only to run from those rules as well. Society would have everyone to believe the big lie of it's never the childs rebellion against God's instruction to parent but first against God. I think being careless at thought can land someone's soul in question. Take care.

Never give money! Ever! I worked with the homeless for over 7 years downtown and it is just a dumb idea. One of the saddest sights I've ever seen is someone take the money they have and buy Scope to get drunk off of since it is technically not against the open bottle laws. I take clothes (Alaska is cold in the winter!) or food. A lot of times I won't even do that. We have a lot of shelters at home that take care of people with the one rule that they must be sober from all drugs and alcohol. They get their own bed, a hot shower, good food, etc. They just have to be sober. Giving money is just aiding the problems.

You are an enabler. I could understand giving a buck to a war veteran or some old guy who got put out on the street or a older guy who may be disabled but giving money to perfectly healthy young spoiled American kids because they don't want to work and they don't want to live at home with mommy ecause they can't follow rules is not helping them.

God, we need a draft so bad!

Give the money to an organized charity that will distribute the money to the really needy people. Some "poor" children are sent out into the streets by parents and even foster parents to beg.. If you are not certain about a child begging for "food money", buy them some food. Being Christain does not mean Sucker.

Go with what is in your heart. You know that if you give them the money you are a kind person. You will be rewarded one of these days for what you do. My mom has always told me if i have money to never deny them because that could be god asking for your help and you know that you done the right thing. And afterwards you feel good about yourself because you could help.

How about telling them you don't have any cash but giving them a coupon or two for a local fast food or grocery store. You can buy a coupon book from McDonalds for fairly cheap and that way you can tear them apart individually and hand them to anyone that asks and they would have to use it on food. Keep up the kind work!

In America, no. Give the money instead to a responsible charity like a food bank, a soup kitchen or catholic family services. If you are in a 3rd world country where no charitable institutions exist like they do in the US, then I think it would be ok to give directly to a beggar.

They need help and the only way you can help is to give them money and hope some day they will find a new life. Think about it . If you give them money they may be able to avoid prostitution and stealing to get drugs.

stop giving money and make them earn it some kind of way...yard work, picking up trash in the community, helping the elderly, if youre such a charitable soul, you should understand this...money is not solving their problems..if they are hungry buy them something to eat...dont ever give money.
