Christians pick and choose what they feel makes their views seem in line with God's desires. Some things they do cannot be justified using only the New Testement, so they use Old Testement passages to justify their practices today.
The beggest example of that is the churches that do not use instruments of music in worship do so because there is no example in the New testement of them doing so and no command, and musical instruments were not used for 600 years in the church. So people use David and what he did to justify their use of instruments in modern worship but they fail to read Amos 6:5.

Yes Jesus brought a new covenant but that does not mean we should discard the OT. Jesus was the fullfilment of the OT and without the NT the OT cannot be complete. The OT was the covenant under the blood of bulls and lambs and foretold of the perfect blood of Christ which was going to come under a new testament. It is the NT that ties all the loose ends of the OT and brings to view the fullfilment of the law and revelation. You need to take evrything from the OT and the NT and come up with the full picture on anything.

Many of the commandments are repeated in the New Testament and the commandment to 1. Love God with all your heart, and 2. Love your neighbor as yourself , those both really cover the 10 commandments.
The old testament law does show what is right and wrong, but we do live under a new and better covenant. We also do not follow the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament.
It is not about what laws that you follow, Nobody can keep the law, nobody. It is about recieving forgivness for your sins and then obeying God as best as you can and leaving the rest up to him. I do the best I can and have to leave the rest up to Jesus, who died for my inabilities. Even though a christian should not be involved in living a life of sin, he still makes mistakes even though he tries not to. Nobody is perfect. The blood of Jesus makes us for our inabilities.
I am not excusing people that are just sinning, they are not really christians.
If I quote from the Old Testament, it shows what is right and what is wrong.

In the OT, the Law was given to the Jews to set them apart as God's Chosen people. They (as an example of all humanity) proved unable to keep even the first commandment (to only worship the One True God).
Jesus said: "I didn't come to do away with the Law, I came to fulfill it". He is the only One capable of keeping God's Law (see Revelation 5) and did so in His life.
Jesus summarized the Law when He said: "A new commandment give I unto you: Love one another as I have loved you. In this is the Law and the prophets fulfilled". So, while the Law is fulfilled in our love for one another, that still does not mean that the Law is still God's Word and therefore worthy of bringing truth into our lives.

The Old Covenant was for the nation of Israel; the New for Christians who are scattered over the globe.
Jehovah does not change, so although Christians are not UNDER the Mosaic Law, the principles found therein can still teach us much about what God expects of us, his qualities and principles, etc.
Romans 15:4 -- "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope."
1 Corinthians 10:11-- "Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come."

The Old Covenant was to offer a sacrifice up once a year for their sins, Jesus was the True & Pure sacrifice to be offered up once & for all, & not once a year. Romans 10:4 Jesus is the END of THE LAW to everyone that believeth. And there is more verses I can use.

Jesus didn't come to abolish the law. Some of the laws He fulfilled (i.e., the ceremonial aspects of the law) that we're not required to do anymore, but the moral laws of the Bible (OT & NT) are still for today.

God set the Old testament with the Jews. There was a prophecy God gave, that there would be a fufillment of the Old Testament- Read Isaiah- Jesus fufilled the Old Testament law, therefore there is no more written law but law that is written in our hearts (Holy Spirit) -Hebrews- So Basically to answer your question, its because God told those in the Old testament that He would bring a Messiah to fufill the Law of Moses.
Christians Basis is the Old testament, without the Old Testament there would be no Christians

The new covenant was the way sins would be forgiven.
In the OT, people would sacrifice a pure animal, usually a lamb, as an offering of blood to cover their sins.
Jesus came and became the Lamb of God, the last blood sacrifice that God would accept to cover our sins, but to get it, we must accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and then take up our cross and follow Him.

There is many laws in the New Test. Those are the ones we follow. I have seen more atheist quote the old laws. They are the ones who think we are to follow those. The saved know better.
