Why does the "a" in bologna sound like a "y"?

It doesn't. American's say "baloney" but the proper pronunciation is more like "bolonyah" and it's a city in Italy where this type of sausage was invented.

If you ask me that whole word is messed up. It sounds like it should be spelled "balony". Who came up with that word anyway?
