I asked a seperate question about mental health and the consensus was that I was depressed. I don't know if I am or not, but something is wrong with me and it's effecting all areas of my life.

I have no counselor and no doctor. The only time I was ever in counseling was in college and they provided a certain amount of time in counseling for free. My dad is a doctor, so he's always taken care of me medically, but he has cancer now and is selling his practice. I don't even know if he can prescribe drugs anymore.

So what can I do to determine whether my problem could be fought with drugs? I assume you need a psychiatrist for this, but I hear they are expensive. My wife and I are have about hundred dollars a month left over after all the bills are paid, so we're pretty much living paycheck to paycheck. Money is an object for us, so I don't know if there's a way to afford a shrink even if I need one.

What should I do? Feel free to check my previous question for more info.

Look for community mental health centers in your area. They generally have psychiatrists there as well as therapists and they will charge you based on income.

If the problem is affecting all areas of your life, you need intervention. It doesn't have to be a psychiatrist. A family doctor can handle common psychiatric conditions too. Do you have coverage to see a family doctor? The other thing is, it's worth exploring if the way you've been feeling is caused by your father being diagnosed with cancer. Often our stress comes out physically as well as mentally. Try getting in touch with your feelings about your dad's illness. Sometimes sitting quietly, introspectively, in a darkened room can help, or writing about it, or talking with someone who serves as a sounding board with very little input. This allows you to vocalize your feelings so that you really 'hear' them, and helps you gain insight into the situation. I hope things get better for you soon.

Usually the community mental health center will be called "(the county you live in) County Mental Health". You should be able to find it in the phone book. Their sliding scale fee can be as low as $1 a visit.

It sounds to me like you have social anxiety. I come from a family that has alot of different mental disorders. Most mental diseases are heridtary. The one in my family that has social anxiety takes Paxil. You can actually go to any medical doctor to get them to prescribe you. Most can even diagnose you without having to go to a psychiatrist. I live in a medium sized town and we still don't have a psychiatrist. Everyone in my family gets diagnosed from a regular medical doctor.

There are free and sliding scale mental health centers...Go to your local community mental health center and they should be able to assist you. Don't fall for an on-line diagnosis. You never know who you are really talking to...Good Luck.
