The two are closely related. The anhinga has a sharp pointed bill and a flexible neck. The neck gives it its alternative name "snake bird". The bill is used to spear fish which the anhinga then throws into the air catching it head first for swallowing.

Cormorants have a long hooked beak for catching fish.
