It’s the voice and the tone they understand, not WHAT you say!

As long as you croon, you might even verbally abuse them,
they would still get the affection.

You are welcome

Cats and dogs are very smart creatures, and they do understand quite a few words, and your cat benefits by you telling her that you love her just as a human does - a feeling of security, which is uplifting to the spirit.

By the way, I've been told that cats really like French, so try saying "je t'aime" (shuh-tem) to your cat!

Cats do not speak nor do they understand English. Or any other human language. They respond to the sound of your voice, and to the manner in which you speak.

Do you want to see proof of this? Say to your cat, in a kind, loving voice, "You useless piece of crap. I should have you skinned and your hyde sewn into a pair of slippers." The cat will most likely respond the same way as when you say "I love you".

He or She will benefit just from you talking to them! It's the attention they need, and if they seem to understand, it just makes it more fun for you! Who knows... maybe your cat had a past life as a human?

Cats will learn to understand certain phrases. While she may not understand the EXACT meaning, she'll understand the basic idea. If you tell her that you love her while she's being petted and snuggled, she'll associate that phrase with being treated with love.

it will more benefit from your tone of voice. When you sayn 'i love you' its in a softer tone and so they see that it is good. When you shout at them they know they have done something wrong. So it doesnt particularly matter what you say because you cat will understand that it is good no matter what.

the tone of your voice is soothing to her. if you say i love you enough, she will learn that this tone means you are happy or pleased with your cat and yourself. plus, the cat will be more attracted to hanging around you instead of heading out. if you use a harsh voice around little kids, don't they get scared? same for cats.

My cat understands certain phrases. the one that gets the biggest respons is, "Ya wanna eat?". Perks him up every time. So if you attach the sentence, "I love you" to petting, she will learn quickly enough what it means.
