Basically they made stong coffee and then remove all the water from it by freezing it to leave it in little crystals.

Unstant coffee. The distant relative of instant coffee.
It's made by crushing the coffee berries into juice. The juice is then filtered. What is left on the filters is gathered and put on very large paper towels to dry in the California sun. The dried bits are then covered in a brown dye and packaged for consumption as unstant coffee.

After it gets better he should do lots of ankle lifts or any exercise that strengthens the lower leg.
For any sports injury, I just remember RICE: rest, ice, compress and elevate.
