An interesting question: it happens to everyone. It appears to be a survival function that goes a bit screwy.
Say, if you are driving along in your car. Essentially, you have to concentrate on the task in hand, read traffic signs rather than being distracted by the girl in the short skirt.
Alas, the same mechanism goes screwy when you think about the girl and forget about the driving.

Obsession drives us to thinking and revising something that we can't let go. I hate that feeling! Usually lasts about two weeks!
It happens because our personalities are naturally obsessive or we have developed an obsessive nature to balance a problem in our lives. Just ask yourself: what are you?
To me, you sound like you've had this naturally. To which I recommend two solutions:
1) Get pills to counteract the chemical imbalances
2) Stop thinking completely. Just learn to shut off your brain. I recently learned not many people can do this; but, if it's not impossible then just try it.
"Bananas in Pyjamas,
Are catching Teddy Bears,
Bananas in Pyjamas,
Are ....???,
Bananas in Pyjamas,
Are .....???,
???? catch them unawares!"
Goodbye!

Well I think that there are several explanations for this.
1 reason would be that the words fits good together, giving a good "rhythm", the brain likes symmetry so...
Another reason would be that you connect the word/words with something that is important to you.
Yet another they migth connect to a strong memory...

ARGHH! I know what you mean, I sang that bleeding Beyonce 'everything you own in a box to the left' song for about 8 hours the other day, and I don't even know the words to it, so I was just making my own up and that got on my nerves even more! Thanks for reminding me anyway!

I've had the lyrics "Major Tom to ground control" in my head for weeks now. I've even caught myself singing it from time to time.
Oh no, here they come again!
