Hi Michael... when a cat exhibits bad breath it could be a result of either periodontal, kidney, respiratory or liver disease to diabetes, skin disease (involving tissue around the lips) or oral trauma, such as electric cord injury. However, by far, the most common problem associated with bad breath is periodontal disease. All which will require a veterinarian's evaluation to treat respectively. Consider an alternative opinion to be certain there isn't an underlying health problems.

A 17 year old! Wow! You've obviously taken very good care of her.Unfortunately, she will soon be showing signs of her age. Has she been acting differently in any way? Drinking more, shabby fur, sores, pale gums, vomiting, and/or bad breath could be signs of kidney failure. You should take her to the vet for a thorough check up.If she has bad teeth, they can be treated and make her more comfortable. She deserves at least that after so many years .

Bad teeth or illness. If it isn't normal yucky cat breath take her to the vet. Look in her mouth, are the teeth even visible? You may have a more serious problem than bad breath.
Age has nothing to do with bad breath, it is usually what is going on internally.

kidney failour in old animales is usually the reason ,have it looked at by a vet ,but also bad teeth and gums can cause this too so dont worry to much ,but as this is a old cat the chances are she has bad teeth ,,,,but internal organs can start to give up,so this is worth getting her checked over just to make sure all else is fine ,bless it its a good age ,you must have looked after it very well,,,,

First of all she is an old cat. Old peoples breath always stinks.(just joking! but seriously it might just be age.) She might have a decaying tooth, which started as something stuck down in her gums. Check for swelling or if her eating habits have changed. Then call your vet and ask. Good luck!

the age is one thing another is she might have a few bad teeth & if your cat eats a lot of soft food that can cause bad breath hard food helps clean the teeth

My cat had very bad breath when he had dental problems, which seemed to improve after he had treatment done. Perhaps you could get a vet to check her teeth for any problems?
Though like mentioned above it could be just her age.

she probably has bad breath just simply from being old. you can help this by giving her raw, never cooked, chicken necks. you can buy these at the supermarkets. if this doesn't stop it there could be a medical problem and you should take her to the vet asap.

At 17, she may be losing teeth and be susceptible to oral infections. Take her to the vet for a dental exam.
