I have tried both and honestly, the less nerve wracking experience was driving. My own nervousness with plane rides made me a basket case, but I was also travelling alone with my 9 mo. old son and let me tell you, it was a nightmare to get through airport security. They stripped open the diaper bag, made me take off my son's shoes and coat, my shoes and coat and made ME fold up the stroller and put it through the X-ray machine (while holding my now struggling and very unhappy son.) All the stuff comes out the other side, I have to struggle to get the stroller off the belt and try and open it up, one-handed and was about to have a conniption fit when a very nice gentleman behind me offered to help. He got the stroller down and flipped it open so I could get my son settled and then he helped me scoop up all my belongings and put them in the stroller (and of course, the line behind me was at a complete standstill). The TSA person didn't even bother to help! And remember the old way of boarding a plane? "Women with small children can board first?" Yeah, not the case - I ended up being the last one on the plane and the last one off. People are so considerate these days. SHEEESH!
And this all was prior to the "liquid limits" that are now placed on flights; I can't imagine trying to travel with an infant on a plane now. My son had a bottle as we were flying out and it calmed him down, "popped his ears" for him and put him to sleep for the 2 plus hour flight. What would a parent do now that you can't take liquids on board????
So, after that experience, I choose to drive. I will take a 12 hour car ride over a flight any day. Besides, we drive at night and the munchkin passes out in his car seat. =)

i have done both with my daughter. When she was a year and a half we went on a family vacation to Aruba. she LOVED being on the airplane- and did really well. We've also made several long trips (12+ hours) to other states in the car. They both have their pro's and con's. Flying doesn't take as long- but on very long flights- if they aren't sleeping it can be hard to keep them entertained. Bring coloring books or a portable dvd player or something. But same thing goes for the car ride! Car rides can be more exhausting- just because they take longer. Sure it's nice because you can stop whenever- but at times it was a pain- because you'd be in the middle of nowhere and "mommy i have to pee and cant hold it". My advice would be to take the plane. And think about how antsy and sick of being in the car you get after a long car ride- kids get 23423 times worse! And it will take waaaaay longer to drive than if it were just you and hubby- you need to plan lots of times to stop and let the kids go run around and get some energy out. You all will be happier and have a less-stressful trip if you fly!

Flying would obviously be faster, but I would prefer driving, as you would have control over things if needed. Like if your child is young enough that you have to worry about temper tantrums and crying and all that. On a plane I wouldn't want to be a disturbance, so I would rather drive.

Probably fly. It's shorter. Well, I guess it would depend on how old the kid was. If they were younger I'd fly. If they were like about 9 or 10 then I'd think about traveling by car. Lot of great sights. I don't mind either.

I was scared of flying myself, but I managed to do it for a trip from North Carolina to Pennsylvania, my husband and I usually drove for that trip. It was much better flying, even though we had to take to hop flights, it was so much quicker, and my son loved it.
