We drive over them every day. We all see them in our streets.
Were other shapes ever considered? Has anyone ever seen one that is not round?

If they were any other shape, they would fall through the hole. They are a constant diameter, unlike a square, trapezoid or rectangle. Plus, they support weight consistently throughout the circle and are easier to manufacture. But what do I know, I'm a pilot not an engineer

They are round for a very good reason, so they won't ever fall in the hole. Any other shape could be turned wrong and dropped down inside the hole which would kill anyone standing underneath it. Yes other shapes were considered and used but after dropping a few down, the round ones were excepted as standard.

City Workers are usually more of a round shape than a square one, so it's kind of easier for them to get down there and complain about the smell.

I would think it's because people like rounded corners and a round hole gives more space than a square one.

I've seen square/rectangluar and trianglar ones as well as round ones here in the UK. Don't know why they're different shapes, maybe different services.

Just simple answer...If it's some other shape, the cap can easily go inside when it is placed diagonally. Round cap can't go even if placed diagnally or anyother position.

Makes them easy to roll into place, and difficult to fall into the hole
