What does the instruction manual say? If you've lost it, the Canon website will have a copy of it.

it means "keep still while taking the photo"

in certain modes the camera has calculated that it will have to leave the aperture open for a little bit longer than usual, this is usualy when you have selected 'no flash' in a low light enviroment. You may not think its low light but remeber this is a machine with little light receptors and all manner of idiot proof hardware. If your camera is set on fully automatic you will never see the hand symbol as the camera will have compensated for the light and speed of the photo. when taking a photo when the hand symbol is on or when you know that you need to keep still try this,.. take a deep breath in a let it out slowly, as you come to the end of the breath relax your shoulders and press the button.

There are four hand icons (see, page 45 of the 2007 manual). A hand indicates the Image Stablizer function is on, and whether you need to purchase a converter to correct the image properly. (see page 190 of the 2007 manual).

Actually, the camera doesn't know if it's being handheld or sitting on a tripod. It knows, however, that the lighting available for the shot is low and it is going to use a slow shutter speed, so you should be aware that a tripod is the best option in this case.

Best of luck!!!

I have a canon.
It means the light is not too bright
and the picture may come out blurry.
Just turn on the flash or raise the iso setting.
The flash is easier.
Alot of times the picture comes out fine.
This is only a warning.

But you have got me wondering- are you sure it's a hand? I have checked the manuals for my powershots S20 and A430 and neither of them have a hand.

It means you are not holding the camera steady, and your pic might be blurred.
