I have had my puppy now for almost 4 weeks and was just told by one of my friends that if I had a smaller space for my pup she wouldn't poop in her cage. Since it's already been 4 weeks, is it too late? Have I already made her accustomed to standing in her own feces?

I would really appreciate it if the question was answered directly. I don't need advice on other techniques, etc. My question is about the divider, not how to house train my pup. I have two other adult dogs that are perfectly trained, I just never had to keep one in a cage before.

It is never too late! Go ahead and put in some dividers. Your dog should have enough room to stand up, turn around and lay down. This SHOULD stop her from using the bathroom in her cage.

Also, dogs will never do that in a place they consider their "home". Try feeding her meals in her crate. Play with her in her crate. I'm sure she is only crated when she is left home alone during the day, and she has begun to associate it with you leaving.

Another possibility is that you are leaving her in her crate for too long. Remember that a dog can only be left without using the bathroom for one hour per month of age.

Good luck with the crate training!!

It is not too late. I reccommend people getting crates with dividers for the GSD pups. Find a good crate that comes with a divider to use. They are easy to move back as the pup grows. Crate training is the best thing you can do for your pup as she is growing. Take her out of the crate as soon as you wake up and when she poops outside, praise her for doing it. She should get the hang of it pretty fast.

it is still a puppy i am guessing around 8 to 10 weeks at that age the will go where ever they are at the time the only way o stop them from doing that is to put them out side the whole time to teach them to go toilet outside and not inside either that or try a kitty litter tray that worked from me when ever my puppy now 3 went to the toilet somewhere i didn't want her to i would rub her nose in it if it was just pee if it was ahit i would tap her on the nose and say naughty then take her to the litter tray it took a couple of weeks to teach her but it worked and the if it is not going to be inside it's whole life then start moving the tray towards the back doorand eventually it will get the idea of going toilet outside instead of inside

by no means is it to late! same thing happend with my pups. They would use the restroom in there cage until they had less space... after I divided them they have never done it in their cage again (except for emergencies)

No, she's still very young. It's not too late at all. I would give the divider a try.

Puppies should be paper trained, not left in a cage to stand in their own feces.

Take the time to train her. You'll both be happier for the effort.
