Ask yourself what countries and regions are going to be most widely spoken as well as the most politically, socially and economically dominant in the next 50 years. That should be the basis of your choice.
1. Spanish
30 million in the US and 600million in Latin America speak it, plus many in other countries (eg. Africa).
2. and 3. Chinese and Hindi
Like it or not, China and India will dominate the 21st century both economically and politically.
4. Arabic
It's the lingua franca of the muslim world, spoken by over 500 million from West Africa to Southeast Asia. Only English, French and Spanish are spoken in more countries and by more people. (Chinese has more speakers, but very few countries.)
5. Swahili
China is giving Africa a fair deal in trade, unlike the US and Europe. Africa may become an equal partner in world trade within a few decades, and Swahili is the most widely and commonly spoken indigenous language of the continent (50 million in at least 12 countries).
If none of those interest you, stick to the UN languages not mentioned above: French and Russian.

That depends on the region. In the United States, we have a lot of Hispanics, so a second language taught is frequently Spanish. Depending on the region, another language could be French (for example, Louisiana) or one of several other languages (such as Russian) depending on the population.

At school in Australia, we get taught to speak either German, French or Japanese.
I think personally, that the Indigenous peoples' of the lands language should be taught, as these are the ones which are more likely to be extinct in 100 years time. It is for this reason, I believe these languages should be educated so that they are preserved rather than be spoken about as a 'once spoken' langage.

I would suggest
1. Spanish........widely used in Latin America & once you learn it it is much easier for you to pick up French, Portugese & Italian.
2. Chinese......almost 2 billion of the world's population speak this language including about 1.3 billion in China & the rest scattered all over in Asia-Pacific & other continents of the world.
......besides once you learn Chinese its very easy for you to pick up Japanese, Korean & several other Asian languages.
Of course my suggestion is based on practicality & usefulness as a means of communication with much benefits to understanding different cultures, doing business & promoting harmony by the largest possible numbers........& does not include political considerations!

I´m from Argentina and i speak spanish.
My school only offers english so if I had to choose 2 more it would be french obviously and i think that portuguese cause we are near to Brazil and we need it for many jobs.Or may be I´d choose italian cause of our roots.
I dont think german is useful cause its not widely spoken at all.

I would go with Spanish(widely spoken in USA)
and Mandarin Chinese.(China is rapidly becoming
a world power.) In fact, many schools in my
area are now offering both these languages,
even in elementary school.

Chinese, Japanese keep the mind flowing. I wish they would. That would be great I have been studying both languages on my own and it gets easier when you learn to pronounce.
