Many cancers go undetected for years because of the lack of side effects. Breast cancer, for example, is likely present for several years before it becomes large enough to be detected by a self breast exam. Prostate cancer is the same way...usually by the time it is detected, it has been present for many years.
Other cancers, such as lung cancer, is more noticeable, because it causes difficulty in breathing, etc. Others yet are very noticeable because it is painful...such as bone cancer.

Yes some cancers are asymtomatic (have no symtoms) such as breast and prostate and skin. That is why it is so important to get regular check ups, skin checks and mamograms.
