It was GB, Sr., who said this on 8/27/87. Later, President Bush's staff council stated:

"As you are aware, the President is a religious man who neither supports atheism nor believes that atheism should be unnecessarily encouraged or supported by the government."

I agree with him completely.

Atheists have as much right to an opinion as any Hindi, Buddhists, Christians, Muslim, Pagans or any other religion.

None of them. It was G. H. W. Bush (W's father).

He was betraying his country as he said it, of course. I can hardly think of a more anti-American statement. You'd think that a man who served in the U.S. military in WWII would show more patriotism than this. But then, his son is so much less patriotic, the father's betrayal hardly matters by comparison.
