I've never thought someone is reluctant to give it to me, but I do feel awkward when I'm waiting and waiting for them to find a penny to give me. I think to myself 'Do I look petty by waiting around for a penny?'

This is one of my pet peaves as well. Most establishments will not let you leave without paying the full amount even if it is 1p. Why should I then allow them to keep any amount of change. If you were to multiply that 1p times the number of other people who patronize the same establishment in a chain across the U.S. then the number would be huge. I for one am not going to give it away.
About 30 years ago there was a guy who noticed how people just passed by pennies and so he advertised for people to send them to him as he was trying to put himself thru school. That young man managed to pay for his tuition with the pennies no one cared about.
When tax season comes the I.R.S. won't let you get away without paying every dime, nickel, penny that they feel is owed.
It takes a 100 pennies to make a dollar. Should we then be paid a penny less per hour. Wouldn't that change the face of the individual paycheck?
So, while pennies are seemingly worthless nuisances they absolutely have value.
A Penny saved is a penny earned.

Actually that would bother me, too. I work in retail and no matter how small the change I try to give it back if they're not already bolting for the door, frantic to get back to whatever it is they are doing. Sometimes I'll ask "do you want the penny?" if I'm feeling lazy, but I think they (all "retail" ppl) should give you your change if you want it. enough pennies can add up to a lot of money.

I know what you mean, it is irritating. If they want to charge 1p more then just put the price up by 1p. You are right to expect it returned to you. You know the old saying, look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves.

Hmmm................ wait for it!
I live in Saudi Arabia where the currency is the Saudi Riyal and the coins are Halalas. Often when awaiting change at a supermarket I will be given a pack of chewing gum instead of the coins. Today we had a small pack of sweets instead, my daughter was most impressed!
My husband often comes home from work, with a banana. On enquiring as to where he got it from, he tells me it's his 'change' from lunch at the works canteen. He's threatened to go in with a hand of bananas to pay for his lunch one day!
I want the money not a pack of gum or a banana!

Oh that really gets my goat, we have a woman who runs a shop by us and she automatically starts to drop your 1p change in the charity box, I have told her on numerous ocassions that I choose which charity I give to and will not be bullied into it, that I want my 1p chance please because like my mom taught me, penny's make pounds and I intend to save my penny's to make my pounds.
