A sample study I made has led me to an interesting observation: there are more divorces when age differences are small and the longest sustained marriages are when age difference is between 6 and 10 years. Please comment. Thanks

There are three kinds of lies:
Lies, bloody lies and statistics.

My parents are only 13 days apart in age and have been married 44 years.

My guess would be that this is a statistical anomaly which comes about from the fact that people who marry younger are more likely to divorce - but they are also more likely to be marrying someone of a very similar age (eg from their class at school, or at most the year above); while those who are mature when they marry are more likely to have, say, a 5-10 year age difference.

Sorry not with the people I know, been married myself for almost 23 years, age difference between me and my hubby, 6 months, before they died my parents were married 51 years, age difference 9 months and my hubby's parents were married 54 years, age difference 3 months, sister married 30 years, age difference 12 months, brother-in-law married 40 years, age difference 5 months, but on the other hand, my 3 brothers all married girls 5 years their junior and were all divorced within 10 years of marriage, best friends married much younger partners and are also now divorced, its how you treat your partner and work at your marriage that matters.

Girls mature before men!!& when men became mature they become wiser than women!!all men in their early twenties are kids!!who want to joke & laugh & not willing to share any responsiblities!si when the girl is 21 & the boy is 23!!they r a child & his mum!!and a child usually wants his mum to do him everything!!but in an older age like 30-35!!men become more mature & responsible!!and the girls got more mature too after 23!! so 32 & 23 works better & more natural !!i think the difference in age should be between 5-10 years not more or less!!best wishes!!

That's interesting...maybe less competition in their life stages? That is, a woman that is 10 years younger than her man is more forgiving of his belly pounch because he's older? Or a woman that is 10 years older is more forgiving of her mate for going out with the guys every weekend because that's the age group he's in?

I'm two years younger than my guy, and I've been happily married for 15 years.

i think divorce is just common place in society now. sad thing to say really. isnt the divorce rate something like 1 in 3 couples?? the age thing is interesting. maybe i'll look for an older woman :-)

Is that more as a percentage of marriages in those age brackets or just 'more'. ?
Because you'll find more married couples with a smaller age difference than with a large age difference

well i think this is a little misleading.

what the study forgot to mention is the primary demograph that DOES marry close to their age range are the young adults. Usually, as many know, young marraiges do not last long.

Now im not saying this isnt true for older marraiges, but im sure percapita its younger couples who tend to marry at younger ages.

Never saw that study myself, but if it is true, I would have to guess that is when the man is older, as women actually mature much faster(or appear to) and men their own age are not mature enough to provide a stable relationship.

Allllrighty. if this is genuine research, then my only comment would be "Cool" - there's nine years between my wife and I. I'd be interested in how big your sample was, and whether you did any research into the stated causal factors of the divorces?

Is there a limit to the age gap before it becomes counter productive?
And does it work both ways (man or woman older)?
