All plants take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen, so they actually add more oxygen to your room. Many tropical plants also clean contaminants from the air making it much healthier. The only legitimate reason for not keeping houseplants is if you have allergies to mold that could grow in the soil if the plats are overwatered.

At night, plants take out oxygen and give out carbon dioxide and water vapor, as products of disassimilation (tissue consumption for feeding). During daytime the process is reversed. They consume water and carbon dioxide and produce oxygen and hydrocarbonates that are used to build up plant tissue and make it grow.
That's why most plants love light and if kept too much in the dark they wither and die.

i'm an A-level biology student plus i'm kinda a straight A in it not trying to boast but just so you'll believe what i'm about to say, during the day plants take in Carbon dioxide n produce oxygen due to photosynthesis but they STILL respire n use up oxygen it's just that they make more oxygen than they can use but during the night no photosynthesis is taking place so only repiration takes place meaning no oxygen is produced instead it's carbon dioxide! ;p
