Try Italy.

You can trek in the Italian Alps around Lake Como (if you've seen Ocean's 12 you'll recognize it), emmerse yourself in Rome's awesome architechture, art, etc. Most of the sights are free! You can take a boat to Capri and live it up with the beautiful people. Eat pizza where it came from-Naples. See Pompeii, then go to a Roman bath and get a massage. Head further south to the Amalfi coast for spectacular scenery.

And, there are lots of inexpensive options for places to stay. There is virtually no violent crime. Just watch for pickpockets and that is easily dealt with by using one of those dorky money belts--better to feel silly than have your money stolen.

But when you do decide on a place, do yourself a favor and buy a really good travel guide. For what you are describing, I would recommend two: Rick Steves (he's an absolute pro), and surprisingly, the MTV travel guides are great.

Also, food for though:

One possibility is to stay for free at people's homes. This means you can splurge on shopping, sightseeing, etc.

The benefit of this is that you really get to make some friends, meet the locals, and so on. And, if you aren't comfortable staying in people's homes--although it's totally legit--you can always contact ppl to meet up for coffee and an insiders tour around Italy.

To do so check out

www.couchsurfing.com

this website connects people all over the world who are traveling--basically you sign up to find hosts, and in return, if some traveler is stranded near you in the future you open your home to them, if you can...but you certainly don't have to.

It's an amazing website.

Good luck and happy travels!

DON'T GO TO COSTA RICA! There is high crime everywhere especially against gringos.

Try Turkey, it is unusual. the food is great, is has friendly people and there is a lot to see and do.

Ride the local buses to get around, or their trains and both are very cheap.

The food is cheap too. Just get out of Istanbul or Ankara and prices drop.

Try Singapore, I guess.... It has a low crime rate, u might find that things are not that expensive (especially if u're not a local and living in US, AUS, etc. and there's different races and culture that u could find over in Singapore. And the food....plenty to choose from! U might want to check out first what u can expect to see in singapore in the internet. Gdluck!
