If your bathtub doubles as a shower , use the showerhead and spray it close to your dog's coat. If you dont have a bathtub that doubles as a shower, just sponge bathe the dog. Put a small amount of doggy shampoo on your fingertips and rub it on the dog's head and keep a fingerspace away from the dog's eyes . Then with a washcloth wash the dog's face as you would your own face. You really only need to wash the dogs tail . Just shower the rear. Make sure that if it is cold outside that the dog gets completely dry and warm before letting it out. And if it is hot out then make sure you have all the soap off and take it for a walk . Dont let it roll in the dirt though !

Well its pretty easy to bath a dog, the tricky bit is not hurting their eyes. Only after they are used to being bathed (and therefore don't struggle) do I attempt to wash their face. My dogs are used to and enjoy being combed so I use an old tooth brush to wash around their head. First I get their head wet then put a bit of pet shampoo on an old tooth brush and use it to dab some shampoo on top of the head side of the head etc then froth it up with the toothbrush (not too rough!). I then wipe off the excess froth/soap with a damp cloth. Finally I get the dog to rest his jaw in my elbow (they get used to doing this also) and I tilt the head upward so water falls away from the eyes whilst washing the soapy areas. I Use one one of those plastic squirty bottle things that used for tomato sauce/ketchup and massage the soapy area while applying water from the bottle, once th soap is out I then move on to another soapy bit of the face. Its slow but strangely the dogs get used to it and after a while seem to enjoy the attention.

Here is what a friend of mine used to do. She always had large dogs, and said this was the best method for washing a big dog:

First, get one of those detachable shower heads with a hose, so you can detach the sprayer/shower head from the top and move it down lower to the tub. Put the dog in the tub and shut the bathroom door, so he can't get away. Hold onto the dog's collar with one hand, and use the sprayer to bathe the dog with the other hand. This is even easier if you have someone to help you. The hose-showerhead makes it easier to clean wherever you want on the dog, avoiding the face, but making sure to get under his belly. Get a tub drain strainer from the hardware store to catch the dog hair and prevent it from clogging your drain. Sure, you will have to clean your tub and bathroom afterwards, but the warm water is much nicer to your dog than bathing him with cold water from the garden hose outside, especially in the winter.

I have 4 large dogs. I wash them in the tub, or outside in the summer. I dont really wash around the face. I use baby shampoo, so if it did get in their face it wouldn't be bad. With the dogs with long hair, I clean the rear by aiming the shower head (detachable) or outside hose directly at that end. I write their name with the soap or the first 4 letters to distribute the suds everywhere.

The way i get my dog washed on his face i cover his eyes with the palm of my hand or get one of the kids to help out and i try to was it off as quickly as possible.

With this ears i push his ear against the side of his head softly making sure no water gets into his ear.

The other way would to get a little water in your palm and push your fingers together so it runs off of your fingertips this way your don't have to worry about a cup or whatever you use.

This is what i do but everyone is different.

It's simple - I use Johnson & Johnson Baby shampoo on my dogs and I never have to worry about it hurting their eyes. This way I can clean their faces thoroughly, and they smell like a baby. As far as behavior, train them to be still just like you would train them to do anything else and they will become accustom to baths. I say no firmly and reposition them, eventually they learn to just stand there and take it.

Those are all great answers so far, I just want to add to make sure that the dye doesn't leak off the collar.

Proof this actually happens is my dog now has a beautifully pink neck...
