You know, that is an interesting question. Then is he trying to imply that you are dumb enough to fall for his playing dumb act? Or is he really dumb to think he can pull the wool over your eyes?

Oh, let's just laugh at the poor jerk and go do something else, OK?

Hmm, interesting question.

I no longer get insulted by being underestimated, in fact I almost enjoy it. It leaves the door open for future antics on my part.

I am however, occasionally taken in by those "playing dumb". I need to work on that. Once I figure out that I have been played, I am not insulted, I am either massively ticked off or awed. (Usually the the former and the one I am mad at is myself mostly.)

So to answer your question, the pretender is more insulting.

Thinking you are dumb is just an attitude and those can change.

Pretending to be dumb is trying to be something you are not for some reason.

The second one is more offensive to me, just be who you are. If you don't like who you are change, but don't pretend to be something you're not.
