no this diet is not safe nor is it healthy. You really need to do some research about the adverse affects of this. denying yourself carbohydrates is not a healthy way to lose weight. Merely eating properly with exercise is enough.

you can cut down a bit on the carbs, but there have been many cases where people get seriously hurt from following this diet.

The Atkins diet works by supressing appetite, and it is the protein that supresses the appetite.

If you are looking at the original Atkins diet, it is probably a bit on the extreme side (and difficult to stick with, because it allows very little variety). The modified Atkins is a bit less extreme, and I think it would be safer. The jury is still out on whether or not Atkins is safe. Part of the difficulty is that a lot of people have put a lot of time and effort and cash investment into trying to get people to use vegetarian/semi vegetarian/low fat/low calorie diets, and so they are not going to approve of something that uses the opposite approach, (and makes them look like idiots for recommending something that doesn't work).

My own feeling is: look at what humans ate as they were evolving: this was a diet based on animal (including fish & insects &c) protein, fruit & veg & nuts, and very few carbohydrates. That is, we evolved to eat a diet that was closer to Atkins than a lot of other diets that are around.

If you're a bit iffy about Atkins, (even the modified Atkins), check out the CSIRO (Australian Government research organisation) Well Being Diet. A number of my work colleagues have used the CSIRO Well Being Diet recently, and others have used the modified Atkins, and they are happy with the results (although they find the amount of meat eating difficult at first).

I am currently on Atkins. The first two of this diet, called the induction phase,is very difficult. I lost 8 lbs the first two weeks. Keep losing on an average 4-6 per week. It is more of a life changing plan then a diet. After you have achieved your goal weight, you still have to be very careful about the carbs. I use alot of the South Beach recipes. Check with your doctor before going on, GOOD LUCK!

I see blurps on the news that the "South Beach" diet picks up where Atkins left off? The Atkins focuses on NO carbs, but we do need SOME carbs, and Atkins more or less promotes ANIMAL fat, and we all know that is NOT a good thing, so, maybe check out the South Beach Diet? Good luck, and happy fitness! :)

It works short term, but once you go off of it you gain all the weight back and maybe even more.

Try eating more fruits and veggies, cutting junk and replace soda with water. Do exercise and you can accomplish what you want!

Good luck.
