Schizophrenia is not hereditary by nature. Its only the susceptiility to the disease that is hereditary. Let me put it this way. There is class of genetic diseases called complex diseases. These disorders are a result of genetic versus environmental interaction. A person may have a genetic predisposition to these diseases but only in the presence of an environment that will trigger the genetic factor will the disease crop up. Examples are diabetes, hypertension, etc. Schizophrenia, by nature, is a complex genetic disease. The possibility that each and every child of yours would carry the genetic susceptibility factor is 50%, if you have a genetic variation. There is no concrete idea as to which gene is involved in the disease susceptibility. So you cannot identify the genetic variation that you are likely to pass it on to your child.

to know more about heretability of Schizophrenia.

But please bear in mind that everything that is known about genetics of Schizophrenia is based on statistical calculation and assumptions. As you can see from the graph that is displayed in the web address I have given, risk for children of schizophrenics to develop the disease is 13%. However there is 87% chance for having a normal child. Therefore, hope for the best. Best of Luck!!

I've heard that there might be a genetic link involved.I don't think it's a reason to worry though. One can have a genitic predisposition for different cancers or heart disease too. It's the luck of the draw. Your baby will be just fine, enjoy parenthood.Good luck!!!!

Schizophrenics do not know they are schizophrenics. Their delusions are their reality.

Perhaps you have something other mental condition...

If so, yes, it is possible to have a normal child. Just be aware that many mental conditions are hereditary.
