I caught a stray kitten back in october, and took it in for the winter, but I cannot afford to take her to the vet for any medical attention. She looks healthy on the outside, but as a stray, she may have worms and whatnot. I put up an ad for a free kitten and indicated that she was a stray. I haven't gotten any replies. She eats like a pig, and we have two other cats to feed. I tried taking her to the animal hospital but they don't take strays. I called the local spca and they didn't have room for any animals. The police dept. won't take her either. We had no choice but to let her back outside. But I woke up to the sound of her mother beating the crap out of her on the front porch. She apparently no longer recognized the scent of her kitten. I took the kitten back inside.
What should I do? I don't have the conscience to euthenize her myself.

By the way....she is staying in our basement so as to not spread anything to our other cats.

Call your local Petsmart and Petco. Ask them about the rescue groups that operate in your area. (Rescues usually have adoption days at the pet stores.) Call up the rescues and ask them if they can take the cat in.

Most rescues have room for more cats - the problem is they don't have foster homes for them. If you offer to foster it, the group may be able to pay for its vet bill and food. All you would have to do is bring it to any adoption fairs.

Poor kitty :(
Take care of the poor little kitten until you can find a better home. Be persistent with advertising. If you make a homemade ad to put up on bulletin boards, include a photo. You would be wise to ask a small fee for the kitten - this prevents bad people from taking the kitten and using it for lab research or other sick reasons. Those types of people do not want to pay for an animal. Check your local paper - many will allow you a small ad at no cost, if the item in question (the kitten) is cheap or free. I have had the best luck with giving away kittens by word of mouth; Talk to other people - friends, family, co-workers, etc. Explain to them the situation, and ask them if they could take the kitten, or if not, if they could help you spread the word. If people know the whole story, you are more likely to find a kind hearted animal lover who will take the kitten.

It's not the best idea, but you could always sit outside the store (preferrably the pet store, if they let you) and see if you could find a potential owner that way.

If all else fails, I would say, just take a deep sigh and accept the fact that kitty number three has adopted YOU. I have met many wonderful kitties this way :o)

Good luck.

I myself say keep the kitten/cat. Keep in mind once you feed it, wellllll you own it. They will see you as a food source and they will continue to come back. I would get in touch with the SPCA or a local animal league and tell them that you are willing to keep the cat but canNOT afford to have the cat checked out at the vet for test to make sure it is healthy. They may very well be able to help you out in that area as they do have a vet and might be willing to do this so as to save a cat.

You're going to need to get the kitten to a vet somehow, or risk the health of your other cats, and potentially even your own health. The only other option you have is to put the kitten out and let nature take its course.

if you want to be unresponsible and down right sneaky, leave it in a box out the front of a vet or animal shelter, ring the bell/knock, and sprint away... works a charm.. or just walk into the pound and ask them to take it because you found it and if they dont you will just abandon it.. harsh but simple
