Your soul is taken. By the god/ess you follow or held with your spirit and the life remembered.
The soul is honestly the true value of the life you lived. It holds the knowledge of this life and like a book gives that knowledge to another source (God Goddess or demon).
If you have no God or Goddess and you live a humble learned life then when the body dies and you have faith, you seek. You seek to understand and thus escape the circle. In essence becoming a Deity unto yourself.
If you have no faith (this does not mean in a god or goddess) even in yourself, yet live a humble learned life, then you doom yourself to become Benegot.
It becomes a sort of Spiritual hell. The faithless Benegot is doomed to wander and wonder. The lost spirit then becomes the tool of the stronger spirits around it (normally evil spirits). Think angel or demon henchmen. Piety has two rewards, the key to salvation is faith.
Centuries ago when Necromancy was commonly practiced the spirit (Benegot) was the one most hunted by Necromancers. The Benegot could then be taught by the necromancers to use the POS (Power of spirit) to do the magic and will of the necromancer. Thus making the necromancer powerful.
With Man's invention of religion and the pushing towards one god and forcing faith towards one god the days of the Benegot were almost ended.Until...abortion. Now when Women have abortions the infants spirit and soul do not get separated and the empty soul is ready and willing to learn. If not for the death of Necromancy as a common study. Hell would return to earth.
If you wish to learn about death and what happens after death of the physical. It is wise to ask the Necromancer.

According to the Qur'an of Islam (15:29), the creation of man involves Allah or an Angel of Allah "breathing" a soul into him. This intangible part of an individual's existence is "pure" at birth and has the potential of growing and achieving nearness to God if the person leads a righteous life. At death the person's soul transitions to an eternal afterlife of bliss, peace and unending spiritual growth (Qur’an 66:8, 39:20). This transition can be pleasant (Heaven) or unpleasant (Hell) depending on the degree to which a person has developed or destroyed his or her soul during life (Qur’an 91:7-10).
From the hadith we understand the Allah assigns an Angel to "breath" soul into an embryo after 40 days of pregnancy. The soul is resposible for the good deeds of a person and oftenly interrupted by the mind or devils which results in committing sins.

I believe during the moment of "death" your soul goes through various experiences (depending on the soul)
Then; depending on the intent of the soul some may choose to return to physical reality. Some may choose to experience in Spirit. The possibilities are many, Basically; the soul upon death realizes that it is all with oneness and begins to see the illusions for what they are.

Your soul travels in peoples hearts and minds, those you have encountered on the Earth. If you were an impressive soul, then many people will think of you after the body is gone. Your soul never dies, unless the memory of you dies. If you leave an imprint on the Earth that is positve and remarkable, even your grandchildren will know who you are without meeting you.

Verily, those whom the angels cause to die while they are wronging their own souls, the angels will say to them : 'What were you after?' They will say : 'We were treated as weak in the land.' The angels will say, 'Was not Allah's earth spacious enough so that you could have emigrated therein?' It is these whose abode shall be Hell, and an evil destination it is;
And guard yourselves against the day when no soul shall serve as a substitute for another soul at all, nor shall any ransom be accepted from it, nor any intercession avail it, nor shall it be helped.

According to Church Beliefs, we go to Heaven. I believe we do for a period of time. I think we are then our soul is placed in a new life (reincarnation). We come back as something else, possible better or worse than what we are now- depending on how we lived in our current life.

What is a soul? Why do you think people have them? Do animals have a soul? Can souls move? Do souls have conscious thought? Can souls make choices?
Just curious?

a person's "soul" exists only within the living mind of that specific person, when the mind goes out, so does the soul.

Your soul either goes to Heaven or hell. You get to choose this destination while you are still alive in the flesh.
