I guess the question really is - is it worth the extra $200 to go with the 400D? My hands are fairly large - will that be a deterrent for the 400D?

I would completely support WithEnlightenment's answer. As you already suspect the ergonomics of the camera are quite important, especially if you have a heavy shooting schedule, such as a long day out in the country, or sporting or other events.

Go to a reputable camera store and hold each camera in your hands and see how they feel to you. Move the command dials and press the buttons, to see how the placement is for you.

Both Nikon and Canon are excellent products.

I would advice the Canon EOS 400D XTi, as it has a higher resolution and a self-cleaning mechanism.

But also consider a Nikon DSLR, like the D50/80/200, just take a look at sample pictures in Flickr.com click here:

I'll fall in line with WithEnlightenment and teef_au. If you have bigger hands, you better go to a shop and pick up the cameras and see. The Canon's seem to be smaller and you might be happier with a Nikon D80 or possibly a D50. If you don't like the way the camera feels, you just plain old won't enjoy it.

Which one feels the most comfortable to use? If you can afford the extra $200. then go for it. Otherwise you will regret not getting the better.
