Seriously, he's a very smart dog,- but not smart enough to use proper bathroom etiquette.

Oh, he will flush after him too,- but that only makes all the germs fly out the pan if the seat's not down, doesn't it!? Am I being too critical?

Never mind that - does he give it a good shake and wash his paws afterwards?

There are two things I need to know before I can give any advice.

First, what size is your dog? Is he about the size of a Yorkshire Terrier or a Labrador or something in between?

Secondly, what breed is he?

I need to know how big or little he is because if he is just about the size of a Yorkie he will need to be trained to move a step or box up to the toilet before he can reach up to put the seat down.

I also need to know what breed he is because if he is a traditionally stupid breed and therefore difficult to train then no matter how many times you tell him to put the lid down he is just not going to do it.

Even some of the brighter more trainable dogs will still need to be reminded once you have taught them what to do.

I know of many, many women owners who are still trying after many years to get their mutts to do this simple task.

P.S. If you have been using the expression 'Put it Down' in front of him this might be the reason you have had no success. These words have a very different connotation to a canine.

close the door so he can't use it? Make him go outside like other dogs, and give him a large bowl of water, instead of the toilet variety.

Don't be silly - A toilet can also be used as a drinking water bowl, as far as a dog's concerned.
