Because they are knowledable and smart enough to know that its effect is nothing compared to the big problems of Mother Earth he/she is working on or know about!

It might be that you are noticing only a negative.
A lot of people of other faiths notice that a lot of Christians say one thing and do another, and a lot of Jews say one thing and mean another and Muslims and Hindus and Pagans and Wiccans and so forth and so on.
It becomes a problem when you only see that one aspect of a part of any human group, and start to see people as groups of hypocrites.
Then you would start to see yourself as better by comparison, and that leads to hatred, and hatred leads to wars.
A real challenge is to look for good in each person.
It builds every person up, rather than one person trying to make himself look better to himself, by making other people look inferior.
Jesus said much the same thing, as did St Paul.
Probably others from other faiths and probably quite often, but I am more familiar with the Christian side of things, so it is what I quote as part of an answer.

Some people want to save the rainforests; some endangered species, and some other things. They can work on these things whether or not they smoke.

The environment inside human body is medically called " milieu interior ". Smokers mostly spoil their own milieu interior and could`nt care less.

its harming themselves, not the environment. what they breathe out doesnt remain in the air long, its heavier so it goes down, if air polution is what you're talking about.
