As Nietzsche said; "...no means are known which call so much into action as a great war...that earthquake-like soul-shaking which a people needs when losing its vitality."

War is necessary, it pushes the development of new technology, look at computers, jet engines, radar, medicines, sanitation...
It stimulates economy, compare the 30's to the 50's in US quality of life.
Also it is the only form of mother nature we have left, the weak fall and the strong survive. Like a forest fire, it creates as it destroys. War revitalizes society.

To more directly address your question WWI and WWII were the only wars, so far, to involve numerous nations from more than 2 continents on such a massive scale. As they are the largest wars so far and created the most effects they are known as "World Wars".

If you want the reasons for why the wars materialized I haven't the time or space to list them in their entirety, but as a general idea:
WWI stemmed from the assassination of a Duke by a rebel, their two respective nations (Austria and Serbia) went to war and all their allies followed.
WWII began when Hitler attempted to conquer the world or at least Europe (who knows what his complete plan was), and instill his "Master Race" over his "Third Reich" Empire. The US entered after Japan bombed their naval fleet to prevent them from conquering land in Asia to provide them with materials for creating a larger Empire.

WW1 was never called that until AFTER WW2
Before that it was called "The Great War" or "The Great Patriotic War"
Even WW2 was not called that until after it was over. It was simply "The War"
The Terms World War 1 & 2 never came about until after both had been fought.

Same with the so-called Gulf War 1 & 2.
Gulf War 1 Was "Desert Storn" or "The Persian Gulf War" or simply the "Gulf War"
It was not called Gulf War 1 until the current conflict in Iraq.

And for the Answerer who offered up Vietnam as an example of a SINGLE war. you are mistaken

What we call the "Vietnam war" is really the "Second Indochina War".

There were 3 "Indochina wars.
The First was against the French when Vietnam and others won their independacy as a French Colony.
The Second was between North and South Vietnam with the US aiding the South. and other countries like Laos and Cambodia getting caught up in it as well.
The "Third Indochina War" was between Vietnam and Cambodia. and ended the Khmer Rouge's "Killing Fields"

actually, those are jsut the only world wars with numbers. there have been more than jsut two.

moist of them were long ago though.

things like the hundred years war, the revolutionary war became a world war. the French an indian war was a world war.

so you see, there have been in actuallity 9 world wars i belive. but only in 1914 and 1939 did war namers get uninventive.

Albert Einstein once said:

"I cannot imagine the weapons that will be used in World War 3, but I know the Weapons of World War 4 will be STICKS AND STONES"

And it will happen.... Just a matter of time.

America is doing everything it possible can, to help prevent that. If other retards from other countries get some good working Nuclear weapons, then its nighty night time.

So SUPPORT YOUR PRESIDENT!!!! HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING. Its for our good.

Sarkozy snubbed Cameron ? Oh my God ! i think that could nicely be appropriate to the betrayal of the united kingdom in the process the ecu assembly which aimed to end the present disaster ( a disaster that could create a international recession.) Wait, Britain stored France and Europe in 2 international wars ? In WW1, France did maximum human beings of the pastime, and in WW2, I worry that the allies did no longer unencumber Europe out of generosity yet as a results of undeniable fact that replaced into the only thank you to defeat Germany, a important threat (oh, and Britain could have been defeated devoid of the U. Oh specific, humorous, they're relatively pacifist and anti-imperialist those days, and regardless of in case you concentrate on the history of Europe, nicely, France, from Louis XIV to Napoleon, replaced into frequently the bully of Europe for many of history, no longer Germany. You adult men are sounding further and further like those human beings trolls you hate lots, inclusive of people who declare they stored Britain's sorry *** and unmarried-handedly won the two international wars.
