Neither. This is an adaption of the old superstition that whoever takes the last cookie or piece of cake will remain unmarried. So eventually, it spread to just about everything else, and it's considered unlucky to eat the last piece -of whatever it is being served! When the bowl goes back into the kitchen with that one last piece in it, if the host or hostess is superstitious too, it'll be thrown out. If not he/she eats it in the kitchen where the others can't see!
It's also an ancient Pagan belief that with any food, one piece should be left as an offering to the gods. But it's also okay for the host to eat that one in private, on behalf of those gods.
A caveat here- If you are the guest in an Oriental home, it's considered an insult to the cook to leave food on your plate! Be sure to only take what you can eat, and eat it all!

they feel that eating the last of anything is bad luck for them........it represents the "running out of" something.........subconsciously, we view the "chip or piece of candy" as the last part of a (our) "whole." If there is no more in sight, we do not take it, because we do not want to run out of (our life's) energy "represented by the candy or chip" and perish. We only feel "safe" when there is something in the (candy) bowl, which represents to us, our physical, emotional, and spiritual being. The candy bowl actually is representative of the physical self first, the root chakra, having to do with the survival instinct. Without this being "satisfied or filled up" we can go no further in our lives (in the healthiest way), and are depleted of all other forms of energy. Must have your basic needs met first.... thus the candy dish must stay full

I never want to eat it because I have that weird idea that it's somehow dirty. Maybe I think that because I assume it's been handled a few times. The lone chip always makes me sad and I usually try to force someone to eat it, like my boyfriend.

I personally have no problems eating the last chip. Especially if I'm drinking beers. But for most people, it's because they think it has been contaminated, or they're being a pig.

the reason why no one will eat the last chip is because that unfortunate person has to refill the basket or container. since most people are lazy they avoid it thus not eating the last chip.

I would not eat the last chippy because I would want someone else there to have the opportunity to eat the last chippy if they more hungry than me. I think it is just politeness but in the end, that chippy rarely if ever gets eaten.

my ex would always finish food ,have an inch thick serve of jam, mustard, last bread roll etc my friends would just assume he was greedy and ill mannered ?? In my mind it is more polite to ask others at the very least before finishing your second or third helping before others have had their first.
