Forks were used in Renaissance Europe, and originally had only three tangs -sometimes two. Early forks and spoons were flat, hence the term "flatware." People learned early on that a spoon could pick up things that a knife could not -soup, for one thing. The first spoons were probably sections of a gourd, and gradually evolved into carved wood. So the knife and spoon became staples. Then somehow, somebody realized that a miniature pitchfork could pick things up by stabbing them, even better than a knife, and wouldn't cut their cheeks. It was a big refinement in the eating ritual, which gained a very prominent place in life in the Renaissance times. Like many Orientals today who carry a pair of chopsticks with them, so too did many Renaissance people carry a set of dining utensils. The fork actually first gained prominence among the nobility, and gradually spread to the common folks. Three tangs was normal, even in colonial America. The four-tang fork is more of a modern adaption.
