I'm an English teacher living in Taiwan. Being here makes one realise what a ridiculous thing it is to say: Taiwan is part of China. Taiwan is a sovereign country in its own right, with a democratically elected government, its own independent economy and cultures and languages not found in China. It has been so since 1949. The Communists took China by force and the Kuomintang defended Taiwan by force. Who's right and who's wrong. The Chinese government has never been elected by its own people. Meanwhile this communist government has also illegally occupied Tibet. They make a habit of claiming what's not theirs.
During its history Taiwan has been run by pirates, Aboriginal tribes, Chinese, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese and Americans. China has no historical claim to Taiwan either.
Taiwan is as little part of China as any other Oriental country. If anybody dont want to believe that, come here and see for yourself.
Being big doesnt give one the right to lay claim on the resources of smaller countries - a lesson America can also take to heart if they dont want the rest of the world to keep hating them.

Taiwan is definately a country and the people there are called "Taiwanese". They have their own president, flag, currency, government, they don't pay taxes to China...they even have their own languages that the "Chinese" don't have! Taiwan is a democracy, while China is not. China unfairely controls its internet users (Google, Wikipedia, etc.) and cover up unfavorable views on China!! Their brutal histories have been covered up. On maps, it is always labeled as an independant country. teenager USA

To me, yes, Taiwan is a country. She has grown progressively and prosperity on her own. Unfortunately, every grown-up was once a baby. Every baby has a Mother. So Taiwan can't run away by the fact that China will always be their Mother.
Mother will always felt that their child is their responsibility no matter how grown up they are. Unless they cut off their ties on official document. There will be no claims then...what yours and mine!!! 37+ Singaporean.

Taiwan is definitely not a country. Taiwan does not meet the internationally recognized criteria (Montevideo Convention criteria) for statehood, so of course it is not a country. I am 32, a female, and live in Japan at present.

Taiwan is not a country. It was a province in China. When the Moaest rebel fought for communism , the anticommunist chinese ran & hid in this province & with the help of America & Britain they declared it independent from the rest of China. Remember, the Taiwanese are Chinese.
