I've been having problems lately with sleeping. I try to sleep around 12, but I end up sleeping around 4/5 and so it's been a huge problem since I wake up at 7 for school. My friend told me to take tylenol pm or anything pm, which has benzyne (which i guess makes you sleep?). I couldn't find anything but regular tylenol that is acetaminophen 500 mg. 500 seems alot, but would I be fine if i took it?

thanks for the respsonses. so i guess i'll try something else.
My sleeping pattern has changed since we were on break last week so my schedule is a little messed up. I was considering just taking "drugs" to get me to sleep then the next day everything would be fine. By the end of the day I get so tired that I need to nap (which will consequently make me not sleep at night). So I try staying up, but I usually end up sleeping on my desk while i'm studying or doing hw. I guess tomorrow i'll strive to be awake doing something nonboring..

Talk to your doc before you take anything as a sleep aid... sometimes there are other things that you can do besides take meds, that will help you get to sleep. I took pills for a while to get me to sleep through the night, they worked, but then i found i couldnt get to sleep without them. I still have sleep problems but it has gotten alot better since i talked to my doc and she suggested things like no tv or eating after a certain time cuz it causes me to get stimulated before bed. Take a warm bath, read a nice book and drink some herbal non caffenated tea. it will really help!! BTW acetomeniphen will just get you kind of drowsy, and if you dont go to bed right away it can even cause you to get hyper and it's even harder to get to sleep. Good Luck!!!!!!!

Tylenol by itself is safe but it probably won't make you fall asleep. Tylenol pm has benadryl in it which is an antihistamine which makes people sleepy or drowsy and helps you sleep. The antihistamine also is good for runny noses and watery eyes because of allergies or colds. Doctors also recommend it for allergic reactions to insect bites and it helps stop or relieve itching from bites, burns or poison ivy and rashes.
There are different types of antihistamines available over the counter without a prescription and you should follow the direction on the box so you do not get an overdose.
If one kind of antihistmine doesnt work for you try a different type.
You do not have to buy COLD OR ALLERGY or a pain killer with a sleep aid..........Check the ingredient on the box of cold medicine that is the antihistamine and then look at the over the counter sleep aids.........it is much cheaper to get it that way.
Also.....if you buy cold medicine to get the benefits of the antihistamine then you might also be getting something else you don't need.....for instance a decongestant is sometimes included (for stuffy nose) but a decongestant can keep you awake, raise your blood pressure and speed up your heart.
So just get a generic sleep aid over the counter and follow directions..........it should work.

Regular Tylenol will not help you sleep nor will it harm you. (As long as you take it the right way) However, there are alternatives to try before pills, believe me I was in the same shoes you were, and it sucked. What I did was make a strict routine. Make sure that you don't increase your sugar or caffeine intake within 2 hours before you want to go to sleep. After you get home from school and finish your homework, go for a walk for about an hour, walk your dog if you have one, or walk with friends, this way you use more energy. When you eat dinner, try to make it about the same time every night and when you finish, go for another walk or play soccer or something physical. Don't try to fall asleep while watching TV, it distracts you subconsciously. When you are all dressed, ready, and in bed, close your eyes and don't open them and try relaxing your tongue to where it doesn't touch the roof of your mouth. Try buying some aromatherapy candles that will help you relax. If you find yourself wanting a snack, try some turkey, the tryptophan will make you tired. After you find and get into your routine, if you are still having problems, you may want to see your doctor and ask about Lunesta or Ambien CR.

First of all, Tylenol PM does not contain benzene. Benzene is a highly poisonous substance. Tylenol PM contains Benadryl (trade name for diphenhydramine (die-fen-hydra-meen). Benadryl can make you drowsy, but it's bad news as far as a sleep aid goes because it can have some very mean side effects like nervousness, anxiety, weakness, severe cramps, explosive diarrhea, vomiting.
You need to put yourself on some kind of schedule. Go to bed at approximately the same time every night and get up at approximately the same time every morning. Your body and your brain will adjust to this in about a week's time. Don't take drugs to make you sleep.

Yeah, i think Tylenol does help induce sleep, but I don't recommend it. But better see the doctor before taking any medications. For the mean while, lets stick to safer side. Maybe you could take a warm glass of milk before trying to sleep. Milk has certain proteins that can help you fall asleep. A warm shower to relax yourself could help too. Try avoiding exercises before you sleep. A quiet and clean environment is also conducive for sleeping. Hopefully, you'd establish a sleeping pattern after some time. If your problem persists, see you doctor, you might have sleeping problems like inductive insomnia or something, which I hope you don't have.

You;d be fine if you took it but it wont make you sleepy. The best thing to do is turn off the PC and get into bed, close your eyes and eventually you will be asleep. Dont get up for any reason.
Try not to eat alot of sugars or caffeine bevergaes in the evening.
Good luck, I know how that feels and it sucks!

that would be okay if you were in pain...but it isn't going to help you sleep any better!!!
why don't you try meditating? Do you sleep with the TV on? any distractions? What keeps you up?
if those dont work then maybe try asking parents or go to the store for some real sleep aid, but you'll need more liek 9 hours to sleep for it to be okay to take.
in other words, no it won't hurt you...but no, don't take it. It'll be useless

Speak to your doctor. The medication that your friends are recommending have a lot of unpleasant side effects, and the sleep is not restful.
Try to get to bed earlier. Sometines when you are overtired, your body cannot go into a restful state.

I don't know how old you are, but check the label, and also remember Tylenol can really mess with your liver if used in excess. Can you ask your doctor?
