If your first leg is on time, and you are not changing airlines, and you are flying only within one country, you *should* be OK with 45 minutes. More time is definitely better, but it's probably not going to be too bad assuming everything is on time. Most airlines operate out of only one or two terminals of any airport; chances are, you will land at a gate that is on the same terminal as your second flight, and then it is just a matter of walking from one gate to another. If you need to change terminals, most airports have shuttles, trolleys, people-movers or trains that go between the terminals; you can ride there instead of walking and if you don't leave past the security checkpoint, there's no checkpoint to clear at the other terminal.
The best thing to do is look up the airport map for your connecting flight. You should be able to see pretty easily what airlines are in what terminals, and how to travel between terminals if you need to.
I've made connecting flights with as little as 20 minutes in between, and never had a problem. Of course if your plane is delayed, you're out of luck, but even a 2-hour layover might not help in that situation!

I'd prefer to have at least an hour. I mean if a layover is necessary. It gives you plenty of time to make your way to connecting flights in airports that you might be unfamiliar with. Once I was expecting a layover in the PHX airport... we had bad weather and was delayed taking off in LA.... by the time we landed in PHX, I was literally RUNNING thorugh the airport trying to get to a different terminal to catch the connecting flight. They were already loaded and was about to shut the door when I got there. I begged....be sure my luggage makes it too. All was well, but I was out of breath and wondered what my flight-mates thought of me when I settled into the seat hugging and puffing.
Two hours is a nice soft cushion. You'd have time to find your gate and probably have a snack. 45 minutes would worry me. Any delays and it starts to get close.
Good luck... and flights are great! I could take off every day...

Some of it depends on the airport. If the layover is at a very large airport you want to allow more time. Also, if the flight from the connecting airport is the last flight of day give yourself plenty of time. If there is a later flight and you miss your connection and its a legal connection given to you by the airline, they can accomadate you on the later flight without fees. If you miss the last flight of the day you will be stuck overnight and miss some of your trip. One other thing to consider is weather. If your connection is in January and is in Chicago or, god forbid, Denver this year, that could have an effect.
Good luck! and have a good trip!

I think an hour is good, depending on the size of the airport. If its really big or stretched out maybe longer.
that'll give you enough time to eat something and relax for a minute.....without putting your trip back too much

What happens if your first airline gets delayed, then your cutting it real close, 1 hour and 15 min is usually good, so you can walk around and stretch
have a good flight!!

At DFW at least an hour and a half. O'Hare I would prefer 2 hours. Anywhere else an hour is fine.
