Whole wheat flour is made from the whole grain. I use it all the time and it can definitely be found in the supermarkets. Look for Wholemeal Flour, each supermarket may add different wording such Bread, Strong, Stoneground or 100% to their own brand or look for Allinson's or Doves Farm. You could ask an assistant to help you find it.

When flour is made it is made from the inner part of the wheat seed. The outer husks and so on is discarded and from this you get the White refined flour. If the flour is made from the whole wheat seed it known as Whole Wheat or Wholemeal. and it is a brown colour. You therefore get white bread and wholemeal bread. The wholemeal contains the dietary fibre or roughage so essential to the smooth working of our digestive systems.
It is definitely not an American term.

100% whole wheat flour is flour that IS milled and the bran and endosperm husk and beard is all left in the finished result.whole wheat flour will usually have some off the above parts off the grain.I know the beard sounds funny ,it is an actual part off the grain.
