Wow, really interesting reading.. I am in Aus and insured my pup when I got her.. 2 months after she was diagnosed with arthritis. I got 80% of the whole cost back and even tho I can't believe it myself she now has cancer and so far I have claimed on the cancer alone about $3500 (Aussie $) I have no excess and I pay $30 per month.. I wouldnt be ablee to have treated my dog this far without the insurance. The policy does have exclusions but only on the eyes (Australian Kelpie x)
Policies around the world must be so different on cover and what does what on every breed

We have pet insurance for our Australian Shepherd for the same reasons you do. I didn't know about pet insurance when I had my last dog, but we ended up going through both an accident and cancer with him, and I didn't want to go through that alone again.
I know that most (if not all) American pet insurance companies have exclusions and restrictions, which is why we went with the company we did. They seemed to have the fewest, insure dogs no matter their age and pay out a decent amount of the bill.
That more people here don't have insurance amazes me. All I can figure is that they haven't had the high vet bills I've had in the past.

I have pet insurance, and I'm a bit new to it. I got it because I think my mom felt that my paranoia towards my dog injuries end up costing me a bit to go to the emergency vet. Anyways I have a USD$100 deductiable (this plan only covers dog emergencies) since she's a puppy and it's only USD$20 a month. Which is nice because my older dog who got arthritis it end up costing me a whole lot of money and this way I pay the $100 and they pay for everything else.
I don't know what it excludes or includes; however, I can change my policy at any time. They have some policies that cover 100% of the visit with a low deductible.
I know there are several companies out there for pet insurance and some varies amoung countries. However, sometimes I think it's a waste of my money and instead I can just put up a savings account for her starting at this age. Put money into it each month so when an emergency happens the money is right there.
I am glad to see you found it useful to have pet insurance. Good Luck.

sharpei owners have a difficult time getting insurance. most policies only cover them for emergencies like being hit by a car. they will not cover them for general medicine because of all of the genetic problems associated with the breed. plus many pet insurance companies do not cover big dogs for hip displysia and other known heriditory problems with that breed. so i believe some people think why bother? but if something should happen i know those who have it are happy they did.

I had it and dropped it. There were too many "restrictions." For example, mine had a $50 deductible Per Visit. A lot of my visits didn't come to quite $50 or just over it.
They seemed to have many ways to get out of paying claims, and for $25/month, it wasn't worth it, I'm afraid. You are also limited to how many times a year you have something done, like a fecal exam, I think, was 2x a year. Well, if you suspected your dog was sick you may need this test and it wouldn't be covered.

Hi!
When I got a new puppy last Fall, I was given the info on the pet insurance. It was like $20 something a month. But the reason I didn't get it was because of the things it covered, like, being hit by a car, up to $1000, loss of limb, up to $1000, being burned, up to $500 coverage. It just was for things, God forbid, that wouldn't likely occur. I was looking for something... maybe cover partial payments on vet visits, on med's.. for spaying... other minor needed surgeries...etc....the things we do have with our dogs.
But I didn't find anything like that.
I hope this helped! :)
Good Luck!

because of the high deductible and the exceptions to the insurance. end up not very useful. Plus i would think many dogs does have some form of heriditary illnesses and these are being excluded. the chances of spending vet fees on new illnesses or accidents doesnt make sense to get insurance.
