Not that I would ever want to crawl inside the mind of Fred Phelps, but my guess is that he is trying to demonstrate that God can, indeed, "HATE" a person, so he quotes Romans 9:13 to prove his point.
It's so sad when people like that call themselves Christians, it gives us all a bad name.

I found this explanation from some crazy site. hope it helps...

Please note: I do not agree with anything that is written below this*

Or, you are thinking of "God is love." God certainly is love, toward His elect (His children). But He certainly is not love toward the reprobate (children of the devil). That's why His elect go to heaven, and the reprobate go to hell. In Romans 9:13, which says "As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated", Jacob is a representative of God's elect, while Esau is a representative of the reprobate. In Romans 1, the word "reprobate" is used to describe gays.

I am not sure with regards to this particular verse. Again; Phelps is a person whom chooses to create fear and present propaganda in order to induce hatred.

God does not "hate" anyone nor condemns anyone. Whether one is gay or not.

Again; this is my point of view. I personally cannot fathom a God that would exercise the emotion of hate. Ask yourself this:

God created us then what logical purpose would God have in creating something just to condemn it? Also God is perfect and all that is created is perfect, correct?

So if God where to condemn even one individual that would be a pretty good example of something that is not perfect!

At least how I perceive it.

God doesn't hate anybody. Think about it. If God hates someone, and God is the source of that someone, then God hates a part of Himself. If God hates part of Himself, then God must have some fault, since He is the ultimate judge. God has no faults, and God does not hate. Anyone.

what is meant in Romans9:13 is that God hated Esau's bad acts not him as a person as with us God doesnot hate any of us but hates our bad deeds ans sins and hates that these dab things have a control on us but this doesnot mean that He is not with us or hates but He wishsto be better and leave any bad deed

Fred Phelps is suffering and needs professional help. He's a hater and likes to promote hate even if it's unfounded.

You know the Bible states that homosexuals are an abomination. The Bible was written by men. Opinionated, biased men who also degraded women. This Phelps character is doing what most gotta be right people do and is using Bible content as he sees fit in order to make his point of view seem right when he is in fact wrong. Beware of false Prophets.

Phelps is a complete moron....but I think what his "followers" mean is that God is capable of hate - just like Phelp's idiot flock.
