I think you are asking how can I boot up in pure DOS. Well, a regular boot disk will do this, however you can't read NTFS volumes, only FAT32 in DOS. I'm guessing you are trying to get to the files on the HDD and move them to another disk. To read NTFS files from a command prompt I use a rescue disk. Most of these are unix boot disks however. You only need to learn a small group of commands to copy files and such. I used TRD recently and it worked well. They even have a script to grab the NTFS drivers from the MS site. (They couldn't make the NTFS drivers open source; MS has that locked.) This is the only hard part, everything else is easy. Read the guide there and you'll do ok. http://trinityhome.org/
Trinity Rescue Kit contains drivers to provide access to almost every commonly used variety of network, mass storage or system hardware. Utilities included allow for network access, shell/command-line sessions, access to just about every file system in common usage (including read/write access to NTFS 5.0), disk test tools, undelete tools (for all file systems including NTFS), partition management applications and even a virus scanner.
Non-Linux users can get started with the kit by using one of the many pre-written scripts included on the disk. For instance, the winpass script polls every available hard disk on the system for Windows installations and resets administrator passwords. This could obviously be used in a destructive fashion, but only if someone has physical access to the console; always restrict physical access to a computer whenever possible!

The first two are correct except you cannot read an XP file in dos, they are two different systems. Xp will read dos bot not the other way around to go to a command prompt click on start go to accessories click on command prompt and the you can type dos commands and see whats in your drive, remember P is protected from this as a secure 32 bit kernel

To get a command prompt, go to the "Start" menu and click "Run", then type "command".
I'm not sure what your last question means.
